The theme of the first issue is Sirens. I read a book this year about the myths of sirens and mermaids and how the myth has changed over time. The book is titled: Seduction and the Secret Power of Women: The Lure of Sirens and Mermaids, and I highly recommend it for all our readers. In reading this book, it made me think about how over and over again in myths, everywhere from Classical Greek stories to the Bible, women are seen as ''temptresses" when they attempt to acknowledge that they are sexual beings. In the light of sirens, my thoughts for this first issue are: how can we use the word "temptress" in a positive way rather than as an insult? What is so frightening about a sexually aware woman? What does it mean to be a temptress or a siren? How do you feel when people judge you based on how you act and dress? Have you ever been called a slut? Have you ever felt out of place when trying to conform to the model of being a ''pure woman?" Our worth should not be based on how many or how few people we sleep with. How do you claim the word "siren?" John William Waterhouse's painting The Siren
